OUYA Delayed to June 25; Gets Another $15 Million in Backing; Bing Gordon Joins Board

May 09, 2013 - 1:12 PM - by dgstorm

We have a triple play story for you guys today for OUYA. First, the OUYA will be delayed a bit. Instead of launching on June 4th, they have pushed things back until June 25th. There are two reasons for this: One, they are working out a sticky controller button issue. Two, they wanted to make sure they ramped up production levels to create a smooth retail launch because demand outpaced their original projections. That seems like bad news wrapped in good news a bit.

The second news bite is obviously good news. OUYA has garnered some big attention and has now received another $15 Million dollars in financial backing. The venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers has led an investment drive worth $15 million for the project. Along with this piece of news is the third morsel. Included in this new influx of investment capital a pretty big name in the gaming industry has joined OUYA's board of directors, ex-Chief Creative Officer of EA Bing Gordon. Here's the full press release,

OUYA RAISES $15 MILLION IN NEW FUNDING; KLEINER PERKINS PARTNER AND
VIDEOGAME EXECUTIVE BING GORDON JOINS BOARD
Funding from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Mayfield Fund, and Others Will Support OUYA’s
Video Game Developer Ecosystem and Expand Production
LOS ANGELES – May 09, 2013 – Video game startup OUYA today announced $15 million in new funding led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), with participation from the Mayfield Fund, NVIDIA, Shasta Ventures, and Occam Partners. The company intends to use the additional funding to support OUYA’s growing game development community, and meet increased demand for the upcoming retail launch. KPCB General Partner Bing Gordon will join the company’s board of directors, which also includes Julie Uhrman, OUYA founder and CEO, and Roy Bahat, chairman of the Board.
OUYA’s vision for a new kind of game console, open to all game developers, was brought to life through the support of early backers who crowdfunded the initial product development on Kickstarter. The crowdfunding effort set Kickstarter records, and delivered $8.6 million –almost nine times the target

OUYA Console Disassembled by iFixit; Reassembles With Ease

May 08, 2013 - 9:36 AM - by dgstorm

The folks at iFixit are at it again, practicing their peculiar fascination with cyber-surgery (of which we are peculiarly enthralled). This time they took their "scalpels" to the new OUYA Android gaming console. They were pleased to find that reassembling the OUYA after dissecting it was extremely easy.

During the process they discovered something intriguing about the console. Apparently, it actually has weights added to it internally in order to help stabilize it in place and give it a more quality feel. It's little details like this that will help OUYA distinguish themselves. Here's a link below to the full teardown process.

Portal Creator's Ouya Exclusive is Soul Fjord

Apr 30, 2013 - 4:09 PM - by dgstorm

Soul Fjord, the next game from Portal creator Kim Swift and the team at Airtight Games, is an Ouya-exclusive dungeon crawler with rhythm-based combat.

"The typical recipe of a rhythm game meets rogue-like dungeon crawler, set in a fantasy universe where Norse mythology has gotten an injection of '70s funk and soul," says Swift, is what makes Soul Fjord special. Its grindhouse-y, 'sploitation elements, which you can see in the trailer below, definitely hit those points.

"As a team," she continues, "we have this sliding bar between '70s funk and Norse mythology. Every decision we make from music, to atmosphere, to characters, to environment we have to make a choice on where we want that slider to land. What that means to you is...Disco Wizards, Lounge Dragons, Norse-Funk music and the baddest Viking in town, Magnus Jones." As Jones, players explore procedurally generated dungeons as he clobbers his way through random enemies and into Valhalla.

Something nutty like this would typically find a welcoming home on PC, where communities live for indie games, or PlayStation Network, where Airtight's own Quantum Conundrum found a loving audience. I asked Kim Swift if Soul Fjord would ever make its way outside the unproven Ouya and onto those markets. "Currently, Soul Fjord is slated to be a console exclusive only to the Ouya, and is designed around the console," she says. Like DoubleFine's Broken Age, this open-endedness allows Airtight to bring Soul Fjord to mobile and PC as well.

Ouya now has over 10,000 developers

Apr 22, 2013 - 3:35 PM - by dgstorm

The Android Ouya console now has 10,000 registered developers working on it, according to the company.

Kellee Santiago, Ouya’s Head of Developer Relations, said the console has now passed the significant 10,000 developer milestone, since shipping to Kickstarter campaign backers at the end of the last month.

Although Santiago hasn’t revealed any of the studios currently onboard with the console, she did note that some announcements would be made in the “upcoming few weeks.”

According to Joystiq though, there are already several high-profile studios rumoured to be working on titles for the Ouya. These include Polytron, Double Fine, Airtight Games and Minority Media.
